I just downloaded and installed Core FTP Server on a Win2000 Server running IIS 6. The installation was very smooth and finished with no errors. I added a site and a user within a couple of minutes. Then I went to another machine, entered my ftp://domainname.com and got a login pop-up where I entered the username and password I setup and connected immediately. This is all good.
But I was unable to put a file on the server from the remote computer. The message was:
An error occured copying a file to the FTP Server. Make sure you have permission to put files on the server.
I am not using Active Directory or WinNT for user login. And the FTP Server in IIS is stopped. The home directory is set for everyone to have full control.
Where have I gone wrong?
FTP Server - fast setup, no write access
Thank you - that was all it took - well, almost.
To make the instructions complete for anyone else who has to solve the same problem:
1) click on the Setup button
2) highlight the domain name (this will list the users)
3) select a user and click on the edit button for the user
4) in the left-hand text list, click on permissions
5) assuming a non-user directory (maintenance of the site), click on the Add button and use the pop-up to navigate to the root directory of the site and click OK.
6) highlight the new directory entry in the access list and check all the permissions you want to be able to use with that site. (if you give permission to create directories, don't forget to consider the Inherit rules)
7) If you had a session open to the ftp server, disconnect it to remove cached permission differences.
Connect via ftp to your server (I use Core FTP Lite). You should be able to read and write (if you gave permissions) successfully.
