It was also happening with my 2005 version of Coreftp, now upgraded to the July 2006 version.
Everytime I try to connect to any servers via Coreftp, I have got this "Application Layer Gateway Service" message for application closed abruptly, send error report.
After that, impossible to log on any servers.
I then have to reboot the computer and try with Ftp Voyager..which sometimes give me the same error...but not 100% like coreftp...
Please note that once the error happen, any ftp voyager, cute, or any would work until i reboot the machine.
What is it ? what is the solution please ?

I am using Trend Micro as extra firewall which I disabled to see if it was the problem...and nothing.
And you mentionned the firewall thing...I just had a go at the Xp Firewall which I disabled...and magic...despite the fact the Application Layer Gateway was shut...I managed to log to an ftp server via core ftp.
So, problem half solved...as it might not be caused by Core Ftp, but need to check with Microsoft now...I guess.
